Robert I. Barber
Robert I. Barber, 89, died peacefully January 21, 2018 at Kindred Greenbriar Healthcare Center in Nashua, NH. Bob was born June 1, 1928 in Cleveland, OH to Warren F. and Jennie (Hoffman) Barber. He graduated from Olmsted Falls High School in 1946 and then from Baldwin Wallace College in 1953. Bob continued his education by earning a Bachelor of Divinity from Yale Divinity School in 1957, then a Master of Sacred Theology from Andover Newton Theological School in 1965 where he studied pastoral counseling and psychology, and finally a Doctor of Ministry from Andover Newton in 1973. He was ordained to the Christian ministry at the Olmsted Falls Community Church in Olmsted Falls, OH in 1957. In Vermont, Bob served as pastor of Wilmington Congregational Church and the Wilder United Church of Christ. He was Director of Chaplaincy Services at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, MA, and Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven, FL. He was also on the staff of the First Congregational Church in Melrose, MA and was the organizing pastor of Trinity Congregational Church in Winter Haven, FL. Bob was a Certified Supervisor of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, and Diplomate of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.
On September 8, 1956 he married Margaret Gordon, daughter of Carlton C. and Helen (Stowe) Gordon in Delmar, NY. They raised their family in Vermont and in Melrose Massachusetts and then moved to Florida. After living in Florida, they retired to Nashua to be closer to their growing family. Bob was a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church in Nashua. He combined his love for his family and hobby of photography – the two perhaps most perfectly joined during treasured family vacations at Maine’s Thompson Lake and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He loved music, nature and exercised his creativity by writing prose and poetry.
Robert is survived by his wife, Margaret, son Timothy and Tim’s wife Mary, granddaughter Elizabeth and grandson William, by daughter Shelley, and granddaughter Jennie Dineen and her fiancé Jared Fuchs. He was predeceased by his brother Glenn and is survived by brothers Warren and David, David’s wife Lynn, Glenn’s wife Margaret, and many nieces and nephews.
