Eugenie C. Murtagh
Eugenie C. Murtagh, 102, of Nashua, died peacefully at Community Hospice House in Merrimack NH on July 4, 2017. Born in Manchester on September 23, 1914, she was the daughter of Celina and Joseph Bourassa. Eugenie was the widow of Leo J. Murtagh.
There are not enough words to describe Jean’s sterling character or the warmth of her always generous heart. Her embrace of others and great open spirit earned her hundreds of long and true friendships.
The core of her life was Faith and Family. One of 16 children, and with 3 of her own, she loved big family parties, staying in touch with everyone’s latest news, and never missing someone’s special day.
She loved to travel, from her extended car trip out West in the 1930’s with her Mom and brothers, to summers on Long Island NY and in New London NH, winters in Jupiter FL, frequent trips to Quebec, long drives down South, and her Anniversary Trip to Europe with her husband,
Jean loved going out to lunch and dinner, or hosting friends in her home for cards, dominoes, or just a glass of wine and conversation.
Wherever she lived – in Lowell, Medford, Nashua – Jean was actively involved in Church, school and community organizations, even serving on her condo association board into her 90’s.
She was an avid reader – often 2-3 books a week – and an unstoppable knitter, having donated over 2,000 hats and baby afghans for needy families through The Wish Project in Lowell.
Jean delighted a huge circle of family and friends in her 102 years, and will be so missed by all.
She is survived by her daughters, Joanne Hatem and her husband Robert Hatem of Jupiter FL and Ogunquit ME, formerly of Lowell MA, and Loraine T. Murtagh of Nashua NH and Stoneham MA. Her daughter Paulie Shilalie predeceased her. She will be missed by her 9 grandchildren and 18 grandchildren, and by devoted friends Toni Ledger and Dot Bedard of Nashua.
