Roger Johnson

Roger Johnson, 88, long-time and very proud resident of Nashua, died Friday November 18, 2016 at Kindred Greenbriar Terrace. Roger passed away peacefully enjoying the many visits from community members and family, greeting each with his trade mark smile.

Born June 8, 1928 in Lawrence, Ma he was the third child (and youngest) of Raymond and Everlyn (Rogers) Johnson. While growing up in a world of depression and war his eternal optimism was reflected in many stories from traveling by car to California and back in the early 30’s, of walking 10 miles to school and delivering ice blocks carved out of local lakes.

He was a graduate of Haverhill High School in 1946 and as a member of the greatest generation, served in the US Navy from 1946-7 circumnavigating the globe on board the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge. Afterwards, Roger studied at the University of New Hampshire and Brandeis University, where he received his B.A degree in 1953.

Roger was married to Priscilla Jean Lewis of Bradford, MA who predeceased him on January 4, 2014 and whom he met during high school. He was a devoted member of the Nashua Rotary Club, being especially engaged with its program to help young people in Nashua to study abroad, and of the Nashua Country Club, remaining a passionate curler until bad hips finally kept him off the ice.

His entrepreneurial flare was displayed throughout his career, helping to equip learning centers and laboratories around New England. Later he took pride in his ability to find and solve issues required to maintain these facilities. As many schools are aware of, Roger’s career was all about diligence in finding solutions for the problems in maintaining our schools and hospitals. To all the custodians, superintendents, principals and teachers… he’ll remember you.

Roger is survived by his sons Greg, Todd, and Brett and by his grandchildren Clara, Thomas, Lucas, Finn, Breezy, Lily, Mason, and Alden and by his great grandchildren August and Anna.
