Overview
New Ipswich was originally granted in 1735 to a group of settlers from Ipswich, Massachusetts by the Colonial Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts. New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth incorporated the town in 1762 as Ipswich and in 1766 as New Ipswich. In 1789, New Hampshire chartered its second academy – New Ipswich Academy, which soon after became Appleton Academy. Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter was chartered first. Appleton Academy was closed in 1968. The early 1800s in New Ipswich marked the construction of the state’s first cotton mill. New Ipswich draws tourists considering its rural historic New England look and proximity to mountains and rivers.
