Mason

Population: 1,212 (1990); 1,147 (2000); 1,336 (2006)

Overview
Mason was originally allotted to New Hampshire by Massachusetts in 1741, but was at that time named “Township Number One.” In 1768 Governor John Wentworth officially gave Mason its name, in honor of Captain John Mason, an English nobleman who owned the land in the early 1600s. Mason was also incorporated in 1768. In 1872 Greenville split-off from Mason to form its own incorporated town. Famously, Samuel Wilson, the man who was believed to inspire the character of Uncle Sam, grew up in Mason. There is a historical marker located at the home, which still stands near the center of town.
