Overview
This territory was one of the first land grants set aside for soldiers who had survived the Seven Years' War against France. The grants of about two thousand acres each were issued by Governor Benning Wentworth to six soldiers originally from Londonderry, Derryfield, Goffstown, or Weare. The land covered by these grants, parts of Eaton and Albany, was incorporated in 1852 in honor of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, who was born 100 years earlier. Madison framed the Bill of Rights, served as Jefferson's Secretary of State, and was President during the War of 1812.
