Overview
Granted in 1761, this town bears the name of General Phineas Lyman, an active commander in the Seven Years' War with France and Spain. General Lyman was compensated for his services by grants in Lyman, Grantham, and Lisbon, and 11 towns in what is now Vermont. The original grant recipients included ten others also named Lyman, which probably affected the selection of the town's name. Due to the remote location, setters experienced difficulties in taking up the claim, and the grant was renewed in 1769. A section of Lyman was taken by legislature in 1854 to form the town of Monroe.
