Overview
This area was first granted in 1735 by Massachusetts Governor Jonathan Belcher as Number 7, one of nine towns set up as defense barriers against Indian attacks. Following the 1741 establishment the boundary between Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Number 7 became part of the lands being granted by the Masonian Proprietors. The township was known as Hillsborough, probably for Colonel John Hill, who had purchased the Number 7 grant from the original grant holders, and in 1748 came to agreement with the Masonian Proprietors about settlement. Hillsborough is the birthplace of Franklin Pierce, fourteenth President of the United States, the only President from New Hampshire.
