Overview
Across the street from Auburn's library, a waterfall and a pond surrounded by towering trees and flowering shrubs have been a backdrop for the photos of may wide-eyed brides and the lure to many wide-eyed fishermen. But it's not the only scenic spot in Auburn. Even the earliest days, Auburn's green meadows, hilly forests and the shores of the beautiful Lake Massabesic appealed to the English and Scotch-Irish newcomers.

Originally called West Chester or Long Meadow, Auburn was official separated from Chester and incorporated on June 23, 1845. At first most families were sustained by agriculture. But since the "mother town" of Chester had already been in existence for 100 years at the time of Auburn's incorporation, an active economy was in place. Auburn had a country store, mills, blacksmith shops, a shoemaker, one doctor, and taverns where visitors could stay while visiting the lake.

Probably Auburn's most-recognized landmark is Lake Massabesic, the source of Manchester's drinking water. Approximately one-third of the land around the lake is owned by Manchester Water Works, and the company provides access for hiking, picnicking, canoing and sailing.
