Overview
One of the grants made to soldiers who fought the French at Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, in 1745, this town was first chartered in 1766 as Burton, to honor General Jonathan Burton of Wilton. In 1833, the town was incorporated and renamed Albany, probably in recognition of the charter of the New York City to Albany New York railroad in that same year. Mount Chocorua, Mount Paugus and the southeastern corner of the White Mountain National Forest are within Albany's borders. Also located in Albany is the Albany Bridge, a 120-foot covered bridge spanning the Swift River, built in 1858.
