Woman’s body washes ashore
RYE – A woman’s body was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean at Cable Beach on Sunday.
According to Police Chief Kevin Walsh, police and firefighters responded to Cable Road Extension at 12:45 p.m. after receiving 911 calls about a body washed up on the beach.
John Wermers, a resident of Cable Road Extension, said some children banged on his door and called out that they needed to call 911. He said they found the woman’s body but could not call police because their cell phones had no service on the beach.
Wermers called the discovery “tragic,” noting, “I’ve seen rescues here plenty of times, but not a recovery.”
Walsh said it was low tide when beachgoers saw a woman’s body floating face-down about 4 feet out into the water. He said she was fully clothed and pronounced dead by emergency responders.
She had an identification card with photograph on her person, but Walsh declined to provide her name, stating authorities had yet to notify her next of kin. The woman was from out of state, he said.
Walsh said the death is under investigation but is not considered suspicious at this time.
