The former president of Public Service Company of New Hampshire, Gary Long, passed away Friday afternoon “after a sudden illness,” the utility said in a statement.

Long stepped down last year to spearhead attempts by PSNH parent Northeast Utilities for the proposed Northern Pass hydropower project.

In an October 2013 appearance before The Telegraph’s editorial board, Long argued forcefully for the controversial project, showing no signs of any illness.

Long starting working for PSNH in 1976 as an assistant engineer, the company said. He served for 38 years and rose to president and chief operating officer from 2000 -13.

He was chairman of the Granite United Way board of directors. He was a veteran of the Air Force.
