CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The University of New Hampshire is a step closer to renovating its athletic complex.

The University System of New Hampshire board of trustees on Friday approved the school’s plan to renovate the complex as part of its campus master plan. The school had successfully raised $5 million in private donations.

UNH says the complex will replace Cowell Stadium and offer increased and improved seating in a new home grandstand to include broadcast and WiFi capability, concessions, restrooms, and a special student section.

UNH President Mark Huddleston said the complex will allow the university to host more state, regional, and national competitions and events like Special Olympics, concerts, and high school championship games.

“Our athletic facilities and venues were identified as a priority in the campus’ master plan in order to improve recruitment, student satisfaction, and our overall visibility in an increasingly competitive marketplace,” Huddleston said. “I am very pleased that the project is moving forward with the support of so many people throughout the state.”
