Wilton Old Home Days scheduled for Aug. 17-25 at Whiting Park

WILTON – Old Home Days will be celebrated from Aug. 17-25, with a wide variety of activities for every member of the family. There will be parades, sports, lots of music, and special events. Most of the events will be held at Whiting Park (“The Flat” at Florence Rideout Elementary School).

Opening ceremonies will be held at 6:30 p.m., Aug. 17, followed by the Kick-off Dance featuring Baby Jakes. Closing ceremonies will be at the Second Congregational Church Parish Hall at 7:30 p.m., Sunday. Aug. 25.

A scavenger hunt will be held all week.

The Old Home Days Parade, with “Why We Come Home” as a theme, will step off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, followed by a Temple Band concert, Studio Two-Beatles tribute.

Parade Grand Marshals are Denny Claire, Dave Finch and Carl Boutwell. Judges are the Select Board members.

The Old Home Days dance begins at 7 p.m.

Other parades include a children’s parade, with a “Dr. Seuss and Anything Silly” theme at 11 a.m., Aug. 17, followed by a dog parade and mobility course at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Aug. 18, a firemen’s parade will be held at 11 a.m.

Special events include “Tombstone Talking,” a history tour of South Yard Cemetery at 3 p.m., on Aug. 17; a flag retirement ceremony on Tuesday; Way-Way-Way Off Broadway production on Wednesday; AJ Dodge Memorial Car Show on Thursday; Wilton High School/WLC All Class Reunion at 7 p.m. on Friday; Flying Gravity Circus at 11 a.m. on Aug. 25.

Music includes “Sheets,” Aug. 17; Jim “Doc” Dougherty on Monday; “Bel Airs” on Thursday.

Sports include a Corn Hole tournament on Aug 17 and 18 – a fund raiser for Junior Athletic Association; Battle of the Badges (firemen vs. police) Aug. 17 at 1 p.m.; a disc golf tournament at the WLC course on Aug. 18; the 14th annual WOHD golf tournament at Townsend Ridge Golf Course on Thursday; Horseshoe tournaments on several levels Friday through Sunday, Aug. 25. A 5K Walk/Fun Run will take place on Aug. 25 beginning at 9:30 a.m. A BMX show is set for Aug. 17 at 1 and 3 p.m.

The Unitarian Church will host a chicken barbecue on Aug. 17 at the Red House; The Second Congregational Church a ham and bean supper on Aug. 18; breakfast on Aug. 18 by the Masons, who will also host a chicken barbecue from 5-7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. A senior dinner under the tent will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25 from 4 to 6.

On Wednesday, activities move to the Curtis Farm from 3 to 8 p.m. with family-friendly events, games for all ages, and a ‘bake walk.”

Wilton has been celebrating Old Home Days every five years since at least the 1970s.
