Carignan announces new police initiative

By Adam Urquhart - Staff Writer | Aug 2, 2019

NASHUA — City police are turning their attention to autism awareness with a new initiative the department began Thursday.

On his first official day as police Chief, Michael Carignan announced this initiative of the Nashua Police Department, the Autism Awareness Program, which is occurring in partnership with Gateways Community Services. The program allows loved ones and caregivers to voluntarily identify those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who live, work or go to school in the community.

The program aims to capture information about those with autism. The purpose is to promote communication and offer quick access to critical information about a person registered with the program in a police emergency.

On Tuesday, there will be a live registration with members of Gateways Community Services during the National Night Out event at the Boys and Girls Club, located at One Positive Place. The event is set for 5-8 p.m.

However, if people are unable to make it Tuesday, they can also participate in the voluntary registration online at http://www.nashuapd.com/, by clicking on the NPD Autism Awareness Patch.
