Police Athletic League winding up for annual softball game

By Mathew Plamondon - Staff Writer | Jul 20, 2019

NASHUA – Nashua police officers and firefighters will be swinging for the fences Thursday during the annual Nashua Police Athletic League softball game at Holman Stadium, prior to the Silver Knights game.

With the strong rivalry between the Police Department and Nashua Fire Rescue continuing at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the emergency responders will continue their struggle for bragging rights.

“It’s about that old police versus fire debate — who is better, me or you?” PAL officer Mike Debisz said. “But it’s always just in good fun.”

“It’s great for raising money; everybody has a great time; we always have a barrel full of laughs,” he added.

Firefighters currently maintain the city trophy after winning the basketball game when the two departments faced off on April 26 during their latest friendly head-to-head match-up.

“Firefighters defeated us in April, so they have the city trophy,” Debisz said. “It’s probably sitting pretty right now in a firehouse, so hopefully we can get it back next week.”

While playing on the home turf of the Silver Knights, Debisz said although home runs are a rarity during the charity event, both teams are filled with players who have experience. Some of that comes from playing high school and college baseball , while others actively play in adult softball and baseball leagues.

“I have never seen a home run in the years I’ve been involved with it, but there are always a lot of great hits,” Debisz said. “We have some really good players playing, some who have played ball in high school and college, and some that are still actively involved in the adult leagues.”

With tickets priced at $12 for adults and $10 for those ages 12 and under, money raised for the event will go to funding programs at PAL and toward Operation Warm, which is an NFR charitable program that serves to provide winter coats to Nashua children in need. Those who buy tickets to the softball game also gets admission to the Silver Knights game at 7 p.m.

“It’s basically two for the price of one,” Debisz said. “They’ll be able to watch our game and stay for the Silver Knights game as well.”

Also, during both games, spectators will be able to enter a 50/50 raffle that will benefit both programs of the departments.

Debisz said the game is made possible with the help of the Silver Knights.

“They’re such gracious hosts, offering up the field,” Debisz added. “The whole stadium feel of it, the ballpark – it just takes it to a whole different level. It’s just like a Major League feel.”
