Santa stops by Senior Center; gingerbread house contest a hit

By Adam Urquhart - Staff Writer | Dec 2, 2018

NASHUA – The Nashua Senior Activity Center got a special visit from the North Pole Saturday morning during its fifth Breakfast with Santa.

This breakfast combines three events into one, featuring a gingerbread house contest and craft fair as well as a morning meal provided by the Nashua Lions Club, who cooked french toast and sausage.

Senior Centeer Development Director Judy Kunz-Porter said the center greatly appreciates the support from the Lions Club for not just preparing breakfast, but also for donating the proceeds to them. Moreover, the gingerbread house contest was a big hit this year.

“It continues to build every year, and when we merged it with Breakfast with Santa, it really adds a nice holiday atmosphere,” Kunz-Porter said. “People love seeing gingerbread houses. It’s a natural marriage between the two events.”

There were more than a dozen gingerbread houses on display, all looking to come out on top in their respective categories, which include best in show, people’s choice and most elegant, to name a few. Over the course of the morning, Kunz-Porter estimated that close to 200 community members passed through to eat, stop by the craft fair and admire the creative gingerbread houses on display. Some took a more traditional tone, featuring themes such as Santa’s village, while another sported a NASCAR theme.

Kunz-Porter said this year’s judges were editor in chief of The Telegraph, Matt Burdette, George Russell of WSMN, Alderwoman June Caron and center supporter Cathy Fariz.

“There’s a little bit of something for everybody, because there’s a lot of different ways you can go with gingerbread houses,” Kunz-Porter said.

In addition, she said that a generous individual in Nashua donated a number of gingerbread houses for the kids who arrived early to decorate while supplies were available. Children could also make reindeer antlers out of construction paper.

Also, the center was collecting toys for the Nashua Police Athletic League Tactical Christmas event, and they will continue to fill boxes of toys after the breakfast.
