Scarecrow returns to downtown Nashua

By Adam Urquhart - Staff Writer | Sep 27, 2018

NASHUA – Main Street got a spooky makeover on Wednesday as Great American Downtown organizers placed 32 scarecrows outside storefronts.

For the fourth year, Great American is organizing a scarecrow competition among downtown businesses and area nonprofit organizations. All scarecrows will be displayed on social media and people will have a two-week window of time to vote online for their favorites. Online votes provide businesses and organizations with a single point, while an additional five points will be awarded when people post selfies with their scarecrows of choice on Facebook and Instagram. Voting will go live Friday and will be open for the first two weeks of October.

“The idea of the scarecrows is that they are expressive of the various businesses and organizations and it seemed like fun,” Great American Executive Director Paul Shea said.

Organizers distribute kits to participants to use for constructing their scarecrows. Originally starting with 16 scarecrows, the competition grew when it opened to nonprofit organizations. Shea said those with the top three scarecrows will receive trophies.

Many participants poured a lot effort and sweat into these straw-filled figures. Some took a creepy approach, while others went for cute scarecrows. Either way plenty of creativity can be seen while walking along Main Street.

“It’s festive, especially with the (New England) Roots Festival,” Shea said of the scheduled Saturday concert. “It will be nice to add some decor.”

Nashua Parks & Recreation Department officials assisted with the decorating by allowing those at Great American to use a truck to take scarecrows from the GAD office to their positions on light posts downtown. Shea took to the streets with volunteer Mary Dellea, hanging each scarecrow with care.

Voting will primarily take place via a voting system at, https://www.downtownnashua.org/downtownscarecrows/. Bonus points for scarecrow selfies on Facebook and Instagram will be awarded accordingly. When people post to social media, organizers ask them to use the hashtag, #downtownscarecrows.

Pictures of the scarecrows will be available online via the Great American Facebook page at, https://www.facebook.com/downtownnashua/.
