Police probe accidental shooting in Litchfield
LITCHFIELD – Police continue investigating the accidental shooting that injured a teenager during the weekend.
The victim, a 17-year-old male whose name police didn’t release, was described as “conscious, alert and stable” when police and medical personnel responded to the scene at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.
The incident happened “in the 200 block” of Charles Bancroft Highway, which is U.S. 3A and Litchfield’s main north-south thoroughfare.
Police said a preliminary investigation determined that the round that struck the teen was fired from a Chiappa Little Badger .22LR, a “lightweight, ultra-compact, break-open rifle” described by the manufacturer as the “ultimate packable survival gun.”
Police said officers were told that a round was loaded into the firearm, and when the barrel was closed, the round was accidentally discharged.
Medical personnel transported the victim to a local hospital, police said. They didn’t list his condition, but said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
