Tree Streets Block Party a bit hit

NASHUA – The second annual Tree Streets Block Party drew many in the neighborhood out to Ash Street Saturday for an afternoon of fun.

“It celebrates the neighborhoods diversity, its people, its programs and it supports its spirit,” Tom Lopez , Nashua Ward 4 Alderman said.

Ash Street was shut down as children and their families played games, enjoyed ice cream and explored different city vehicles. Something new this year was the addition of a touch-a-truck component, where people could explore a city bus, fire truck, bomb squad vehicle, garbage truck from public works and the Harbor Homes mobile clinic.

“By doing touch-a-truck, it gives people a chance to meet different city employees and people who are doing things around town, and they can ask them questions,” Lopez said.

People could learn how to mount bikes on the front of a city bus when traveling with them, and at the garbage truck, people could learn about what they do in solid waste and recycling.

Other activities included a rice tasting competition to see who prepares the best rice on the block, live concerts from local musicians and a live art battle, hosted by Positive Street Art.

Although Lopez initially organized the the block party, he said it was put on by a collection of people, including support from Great American Downtown, Crossways Christian Church, the Nashua Public Library and most anyone in the vicinity of the neighborhood. He said Jen McCormack, NPL director, organized more than 22 nonprofit organizations to be at the block party.

“The Tree Streets is a great place for people to live,” Lopez said. “It’s a great community here, and people come out and like to celebrate.”
