NASHUA – Nashua Police conducted another Granite Shield operation on Thursday where fourteen individuals were arrested for various drug crimes, and crimes associated with drug activity.

Lieutenant Brian Kenney with the Narcotics Intelligence Division said, “To use this most recent operation as an example, we see a lot of opioids and sale of heroin, and when we’re out doing enforcement to wrap up dealers and opioid activities it’s unavoidable to run into collateral arrests.” “We’re seeing meth, crack cocaine, powder cocaine and prescription pill arrests as a result of doing extra enforcement.”

He said they’re not just having an affect on the opioid crisis, but also the trade of other illicit drugs. According to last years Granite Hammer statistics, 208 arrests were made during the year. However, according to Kenney’s calculations, this year 208 arrests have been made, so far, after this most recent operation that are solely attributed to Granite Shield operations. Kenney said he absolutely feels the operations are making an impact in the community.

“We talk to everyone we arrest and when we’re talking to people they tell us how hard it is to come by, or if they need to get drugs off the street, they have to travel to get their drugs and bring them back to use,” Kenney said. “There’s very little here to buy and if you can buy here it’s small amounts and it’s very expensive.”

The drug activity they’re seeing in Nashua is, for the most part, lower level drug activity. He said the legitimate for profit dealers, for the most part, are in Massachusetts, or moved here to go to another jurisdiction.

“It’s still here because people can get it in other communities, but it’s harder to come by here which is obviously a good thing,” Kenney said.
