Disabled vets look to put puck in net

By Adam Urquhart - Staff Writer | Dec 16, 2017

A Nashua man who helped co-found the New England Warriors sled hockey program is looking for donations through a charity game against the Boston Shamrocks.

On Dec. 23, the two teams will face off at JFK Arena at 303 Beech St., Manchester. The game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public. All proceeds will go toward benefiting the Warriors program.

“We’re a team of wounded veterans, and we play sled hockey,” said co-founder and captain Ian Ramsdell, of Nashua. “This is for those who could never play stand up hockey because of their disabilities.”

The team is a a chapter of the USA Warriors and consist of wounded, ill and injured veterans and supporters. This game is one of the many fundraising efforts they do to support their program and continue to offer both physical and mental benefits to those out on the ice.

Currently, the team is looking to businesses prior to the game for help with raffle baskets, a silent auction and monetary donations. At the game, there will be a 50/50 raffle, raffle prizes from local businesses, a cash raffle and a Christmas raffle. All donations are tax deductible, and all proceeds from the fundraising event go directly back into the Warriors program.

The New England Warriors are a nonprofit veterans-based adaptive ice hockey team that allows people with disabilities the chance to get out on the ice and enjoy the sport. They’re currently the only sled hockey team in Maine, and as a result, have some non-veteran players who are physically disabled that play for them. All of their staff are volunteers.

Although they’re based out of Lewiston, Maine, the team is comprised of players from all over New England.

“We would love to fill the stands and have a crowd to cheer them on,” Ramsdell said.

If you or your business is interested in donating, contact team manager Nichole Ramsdell at 757-589-2478 or newarriors@yahoo.com; or contact Ramsdell at 757-470-1098 or ramsdelli@icloud.com.
