Fire hydrant floods, closes road in Merrimack

MERRIMACK – A section of Turkey Hill Road was closed after a front loader working on bridge construction backed into an old fire hydrant, police said.

Water gushed from the hydrant for a half hour, flooding the roadway. A temporary bridge was erected on this busy commuter thoroughfare, police said.

The mishap occurred shortly before 10 a.m., and the road was back up to one lane of travel by 3 p.m., police said.

Work crews were repairing a bridge where the road crosses the Souhegan River, police said.
