Alvirne prepares for ‘Shrek’ musical

Alvirne High School’s theater group, Class Act, is so excited to be nearing the date of its spring musical, "Shrek."

This Broadway reinterpretation of the DreamWorks animated film in which an ogre and a princess find out what true love really looks like has students throughout Alvirne High School letting their freak flags fly.

"This is the first time I’ve acted," said Brianna Thompson, a senior who will play the role of the dragon. "It’s given me a new perspective on theater and how hard it is to be an actor.

"I’m glad I’ve been given the opportunity to show my skills and share this experience with the cast. They’ve been extremely driven, and I think this will turn out to be a great show."

The cast’s drive and talent are proven by the cooperation, passion, and eagerness to learn that they all have clearly displayed throughout the rehearsal process.

"We’re really working hard and bringing the whole school’s talent together and putting it into one spectacular musical that showcases everyone’s unique skills," said Corinne Prestia, a junior who will play the role of The Mad Hatter.

"?’Shrek’ includes amazing singers, dancers, actors, and many all-around talented teens. It will be a blast for the whole family."

Musicals, "Shrek" included, are an interdisciplinary art form. While many students in Class Act can already sing or dance in addition to acting, this show has brought together students from Alvirne’s choral program and local dance studios.

These students have eagerly shared their individual talents with one another to benefit both the show and their peers: They have been working together to grow, improve their craft and hone their skills.

"Shrek" will premiere at Alvirne High School (200 Derry Road in Hudson) at 7 p.m. Friday, May 20. Saturday will have two performances: a 2 p.m. matinee and an evening show at 7. Sunday will close the show’s run with one matinee performance.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at
