South’s juniors start prom site

By Staff | Mar 13, 2016

It’s every girl’s worst nightmare: showing up to prom with the same dress as someone else. The awkwardness and comparisons would be just too much to bear.

Thankfully, (Whoo … go, Internet!) juniors at Nashua High School South no longer have to worry about that. Introducing: the Facebook Junior Prom Page.

For junior girls stressing over the expectations, it has been a godsend. Using the page, juniors can dish about what they are wearing, share plans, and offer moral support.

Carson Dowling, a South junior, said the page was "a great place to get the juniors excited about a school event," and what started out as a way to claim dresses has evolved into a support system for women on the fence about attire decisions.

It all starts with a Facebook notification: "You have been added to the Jprom page." Shortly after that, the official date of prom is posted, in this case, Friday, April 15. Then the picture posting begins, with each girl offering picture of their prom dresses in hopes that no one will buy one like it. Comments ensue. Girls approve each other’s dresses, gave undecided girls a boost of confidence, and ask questions about accessories and prom plans.

To date, there are 160 members on the page, a substantial portion of the the junior class girls. It was created by junior Kelsi Piche, and the numbers grew exponentially due to a handful of members inviting more and more juniors. The seniors have a similar page, where dresses — and costs — are more extravagant.

Tara Bush is a South junior and member of the page.

"Although many interactions between girls on the page seem fake, there are lots of conversations and opinions that boost confidence," Bush said.

The continuous theme on the page is support, whether it’s a best friend or a complete stranger commenting on a person’s’ dress. This positivity is crucial for a good turnout to junior prom, page members say, and shows how supportive girls can be to one another.
