Nashua PAL to honor 2016 Boxer of the Year
NASHUA – The Nashua Police Athletic League announced that its 2016 Boxer of the Year is Marco Uribe.
Marco, 14, along with PAL’s athletes of the year in cross country, cheerleading, football and basketball, will be honored with other award winners at the sixth annual PAL Sports Dinner at Conway Arena on Thursday, June 30.
The 2016 PAL of the Year is Mike O’Malley, a Hollywood actor, writer and producer.
Marco, a freshman at Nashua High School South, is a veteran of the Nashua PAL Boxing Club, located at 52 Ash St. on the upstairs floor at the PAL Youth Safe Haven. Described by his coaches as hardworking and dedicated, Marco capped off this year’s competition season by going 4-0 and winning the New England Silver Mittens championship in the 106-pound class.
By winning the Silver Mittens tourney, held annually in Billerica, Mass., Marco followed in the footsteps of 2014 PAL Boxer of the Year Matt Fontanez, who on went on to win the 2016 Central New England Golden Gloves title.
Marco, a solid performer in the classroom at South, says his idol in the professional boxing ranks is Oscar de la Hoya, a multiple weight class title-holder and Olympian. Marco’s coaches, Muhammed Brooks and Frank Chimento, say his daily attendance at the PAL Boxing Club and the discipline he exhibits while training are an example and an inspiration to the scores of amateur boxers who train there.
All proceeds from the PAL Sports Dinner will support PAL’s academic, athletic and other enrichment programs available to all Nashua children, including its at-risk youths.
