NEW IPSWICH – An autopsy was scheduled Monday on the body of the unidentified person killed in a Sunday night crash and fire on Route 124, officials said.

State fire marshal Bill Degnan and New Ipswich Police Chief Tim Carpenter said Monday that their agencies are conducting a joint investigation into the crash, which occurred about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

They said the vehicle left the road, crashed into a wooded area and caught fire. The impact likely caused the fire, the officials added.

Degnan and Carpenter didn’t say what caused the crash, but Carpenter urged drivers to exercise extra caution given the recent snowstorm and subsequent mixed precipitation event Monday.

They said the identity of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and the process of notifying family members is complete.

Chief medical examiner Thomas Andrew was scheduled to conduct the autopsy.
