Fugitive assaults officers during arrest, police say

NASHUA – A suspect wanted in Virginia assaulted police officers who arrested him on a fugitive warrant, police said.

Jeffrey Riel, 32, of of 4302 Surf Ave., Chesapeake, Va., was arrested Wednesday after being stopped by police. He is charged with being a fugitive from justice, resisting arrest and two counts of simple assault, police said.

At about 11:40 p.m., Nashua police officers stopped Riel, whom they observed behind a closed business, police said.

A check revealed that Riel had an active arrest warrant out of the Chesapeake, Va., sheriff’s office for a probation violation on an original charge of unlawful wounding, police said.

During the arrest, Riel resisted officers and assaulted the arresting officers twice, police said. No officer was injured during the these assaults, police said.

Riel will be returned to Virginia to face the probation violation charge, police said. Riel was held at the Nashua Police Department pending arraignment Wednesday at the 9th Circuit Court – Nashua District Division.
