Hudson woman facing forgery charges after passing fake $20 bills in Merrimack

Merrimack police arrested a Hudson woman Tuesday and charged her with using forged $20 bills around town.

Police arrested Brenda Summers, 51, of 38 Library St., and charged her with five counts of forgery and one count of attempted forgery, police said.

Police began investigating on Feb. 27 when businesses around town began reporting fake $20 bills in circulation the day before, police said.

The bills were used at McDonald’s, Galaxy Gas, Wendy’s, Walgreens and Dunkin’ Donuts. An attempt to use a fake bill at a Gulf gas station was waylaid by an alert clerk, police said.

Police reviewed video footage and worked with other police departments in towns where the fake bills also were passed, police said.

Summers was arraigned on the charges Tuesday. She is being held on $50,000 cash or surety bail pending a probable cause hearing at Merrimack district court on April 6, police said.
