Two-alarm fire evacuates plastic plant in Merrimack on Saturday

MERRIMACK – Eighteen workers had to be evacuated after a fire broke out in the exhaust system at the Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Corp. on Saturday afternoon.

The two-alarm fire was called in by an off-duty fire lieutenant who was driving down Daniel Webster Highway in Merrimack around 4 p.m., said Fire Chief Mike Currier.

The blaze was under control within an hour after firefighters arrived.

No one was injured, Currier said.

Fire trucks from Merrimack and Nashua responded to the scene, and Bedford and Amherst departments covered the two Merrimack stations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

About six years ago, the Merrimack Fire Department responded to a fire in the same exhaust stack, Currier said.

Saint Gobain Performance Plastics makes products for a number of uses, including aerospace, automotive and consumer products.
