Escapee from jail captured in area
AMHERST – The man who escaped from the Sullivan County jail earlier this month was captured Monday in Amherst.
Robert Hale III, 45, was arraigned in Milford District Court on Monday on a charge of burglary after Amherst police arrested him following a report of a suspicious person, according to State Trooper Eric Berube.
Hale escaped from the Sullivan County of Corrections in Claremont on Nov. 19. Jail officials learned early that morning that Hale had escaped by cutting a hole in the ceiling of his cell. It’s believed he worked on the hole for some time, concealing it with toothpaste. He was being held on armed robbery charges.
Around 11 a.m. Monday, Amherst police were called for a reported suspicious person on School House Road, according to Amherst Police Chief Peter Lyon.
Lyon said the person who called police simply thought Hale was “out of place” on the rural road in the northern part of town and called police. Hale provided his name to the responding officer, who recognized it from news reports of his escape, and he was arrested without incident, Lyon said.
He is charged with breaking into a storage shed at the Amherst Transfer Station off Route 101 sometime over the weekend, where he allegedly stole a jacket and some steak knives, Lyon said. Hale had the steak knives in his possession when he was arrested, Lyon said.
The Sullivan County sheriff’s office teamed with the U.S. Marshals Service, the Sullivan County Department of Corrections, police in Claremont, Amherst and Norwich, Conn., and state police in New Hampshire and Connecticut in the search for Hale, Berube said.
Hale was spotted near Colchester, Conn., the day after his escape, according to the Sullivan County sheriff’s office.
Berube said there was no indication before his arrest that Hale had returned to New Hampshire. Police are still investigating Hale’s movements during the nearly two weeks he was at large, Berube said. Hale was arraigned Monday in Milford and will be arraigned at Newport District Court today on one charge of escape, Berube said.
