1 intruder killed in Berlin shooting

BERLIN – Authorities say a home invasion in Berlin has left one intruder fatally shot and another critically injured.

The state attorney general’s office says three men, at least two of them with handguns, entered an apartment about 8 p.m. Wednesday. Authorities say a man and woman inside were assaulted during a robbery attempt.

The man managed to get his own gun, and several shots were fired.

Killed at the scene was 23-year-old Nathaniel Stringfield, of Berlin, one of the intruders.

Another alleged intruder was found injured a short distance away. He’s been hospitalized in critical condition at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The attorney general’s office says the third man had not been apprehended Thursday and no one has been arrested.

The couple suffered minor injuries.

The invasion is the second deadly one to happen in a small community in the state in recent months.

On Oct. 4, four young men allegedly broke into the Cates’ house on Trow Road in Mont Vernon at about 4 a.m., having agreed in advance that they would kill anyone they found inside. The four picked the house because it was remote and relatively isolated, prosecutors said.

Kimberly Cates, 42, was killed during the invasion, and her daughter Jaimie Cates, 11, received severe wounds from a machete and knife, police said.

Five have been charged in connection with the murder and invasion.

Christopher Gribble, 20, of 23 Oak Hill Road, Brookline, and Steven Spader, 18, of 7 Wallace Brook Road, Brookline, each face charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to murder. Prosecutors have said Gribble used a knife and Spader a machete to murder Cates and attack Jaimie.

William Marks, 18, of 464 Boston Post Road, Amherst, and Quinn Glover, 17, of 34 Blueberry Hill Road, Amherst, each are charged with burglary, conspiracy to burglary, and robbery.

On Nov. 18, 20-year-old Autumn Savoy, of Hollis, was arrested and charged with two counts of hindering apprehension or prosecution and one count of conspiracy to hinder apprehension or prosecution, all Class B felonies.

Savoy is accused of providing an alibi for Spader and Gribble, and telling investigators the two had spent the night of Oct. 3 and most of Oct. 4 at Savoy’s house. Assistant Attorney General Peter Hinckley also said Savoy helped Spader and Gribble search the Internet for news stories or other mention of the crime and helped the pair bag clothing they allegedly wore during the assaults and items stolen from the Cates home, then helped them dispose of the bag or bags in the Nashua River in Hollis.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
