Around the towns: Lyndeborough finally adds two more stars to its Town Hall flag
If you looked closely at the silk flag that was until recently hanging at the side of the Lyndeborough Town Hall stage, you’d notice something different.
It has 48 stars, which means it’s been there since at least 1958 – Alaska was admitted as a state Jan. 3, 1959, and Hawaii followed later that year.
The town stopped using the hall for Town Meetings in the early 1960s. Pinnacle Grange used the room until the mid-1970s, but the group used its own flags in ceremonies, leaving this one unchanged.
Since the flag is beginning to deteriorate, the decision was made recently to investigate the proper procedure for having the flag cleaned and then framed. Once preserved, it will hang in the Town Hall.
Several residents commented on the flag when it was taken down: “It takes Lyndeborough a while to make changes; 50 years isn’t so long.”
