The Nashua Senior Activity Center hosted its annual Holiday Social on Friday, amplifying the holiday spirit of those in attendance.

The event started at 1:30 p.m. with music provided by Perfect Entertainment for folks to enjoy listening to while they mingled over refreshments.

“I think some people may not have a lot of family around, so it’s good to get together with friends,” Activities Director Cathy Barrett said.

The center tries to do a little something different at its Holiday Social each year, whether it be a dance, presentation or a guest singer.

At this year’s event, mostly Christmas tunes were played, with a couple dance songs in between, drawing a few to the dance floor.

The music entertainment lasted about an hour before things switched gears, moving into the 50/50 raffle, where half the money went to the center, and the other half went home with the winner.

“People are enjoying themselves, it’s a happy time,” Barrett said.

Some seniors even volunteered with setting things up for the

social, such as hanging decorations, setting tables or helping with refreshments.

“It doesn’t matter what you celebrate. This is a time to get together,” Barrett said.

She said this year’s social had a low turnout in comparison to previous years due to other events overlapping, but nonetheless, those that did attend connected with one another through conversation and holiday cheer.

“I came to tease Cathy,” attendee Arthur Hollander said jokingly, adding that, “They’re all nice people here.”

This is the first year he’s attended one of their holiday socials, and he originally got involved with coming to the Senior Center as a result of his sons’ advice.

“My sons tell me, why don’t you go to the Senior Center? I said, ‘There’s old people there, and I’m 91-years-old,'” Hollander said.

With a young soul, he recalled a recent trip he went on through the senior center to see Cirque du Soleil and said he enjoyed attending that.

Whether going on day trips or attending social events like Friday’s holiday social, the senior center has much to offer, including volunteer work. That was the case for volunteer Lucy Gagnon, who helped out with setting things for the social.

“I work here as a volunteer and helped decorate the Christmas tree,” Gagnon said.

She said there was a good atmosphere at the event, and that there was a good group of people who attended.

“It’s good for seniors to get out of the house,” Gagnon said, adding that, “More people should join the center. It’s a place to meet friends and socialize.”
