A Brookline man who competed in the popular reality TV show “Survivor” died unexpectedly on New Year’s Eve.

Daniel Kay Jr., 40, whose cause of death hasn’t been revealed, competed in Gabon, Africa, in 2008 during the 17th season of the long-running series.

Kay leaves behind two young children, Reese Elizabeth Kay and Jackson Russell-Reid Kay, said an obituary from Lambert Funeral Home and Crematory in Manchester.

He grew up in Walpole, Mass., where he played football for the high school. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a law degree from Syracuse University.

Kay was employed as a civilian attorney for the U.S. Air Force at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Mass.

“Those who knew Dan best agree he was a child at heart,” the obituary said.

In addition to his stint on “Survivor,” Kay enjoyed running and skiing – he successfully skied Tuckerman’s Ravine on Mount Washington and completed a half-marathon.

Along with his children, Kay is survived by his mother, Jean-Ann (Dziubaniuk); girlfriend, Jennifer DePietro; and sister, Andrea (Thomas) Nichols, as well as many other relatives and friends.
