NASHUA –The first stand-alone Service Credit Union in the area opened Monday, at 337 Amherst St. in Nashua.

The opening is part of the Portsmouth-based institutions’ expansion into southern New Hampshire.

The 47-year-old credit union was chartered to serve military and civilian employees at Pease Air Force Base, and now claims 185,000 members and more than $2.4 billion in assets. It’s open to residents living anywhere in New Hampshire except Coos County, four towns in Cape Cod, and any military personnel and their families.

It has a stand-alone branch in Bedford and one inside the Walmart store in Hudson.

Service Credit Union also has a branch in Massachusetts and 16 overseas on military installations in Germany.

The Nashua branch was built in the former location of a strip mall, best known for holding Chen Yang Li restaurant.

The strip mall was torn down last year and most of its stores, including Chen Yang Li, have reopened elsewhere along
Amherst Street.

The Nashua Service Credit Union is a traditional branch offering banking services, mortgages, consumer loans, and an ATM open during bank hours.

A self-service 24/7 automated ATM is slated to open later this year.
