STRATHAM – A Merrimack man was killed Monday afternoon when his Harley Davidson motorcycle struck a sport utility vehicle on Portsmouth Avenue.

State police identified the motorcyclist as 61-year-old Leon Hass.

Police responded to the accident around 2 p.m. at the traffic lights at the entrance to Shaw’s supermarket.

According to State police, Hass was traveling southbound when, for an unknown reason, he lost control of his 2009 Harley Davidson FXDC motorcycle. He crashed into a 2011 Honda CRV that also was heading southbound and was stopped at the lights.

The driver of the CRV, Kyle Smith, 44, of Newfields, was checked out by emergency personnel as a precaution but wasn’t injured, police said.

Stratham Police Chief John Scippa said that because of the seriousness of the accident the State Police Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Unit was called in to assist with the investigation.

State Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

Stratham police were also assisted at the scene by the Stratham Fire Department, State Police, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department and the Newfields Police Department.
