40-year-old woman charged with assault

A Nashua woman was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with assault after reports of an assault on a preteen girl.

The Nashua Police Department arrested Aimee Busby, 40, of 56 Lund Road, Apt. B, on a warrant for second-degree assault – domestic violence, a Class B felony, around 4:10 p.m. Thursday.

The arrest came after police received a report on Feb. 13 of a juvenile who was physically assaulted by the juvenile’s mother several days prior. Police said the victim, 12, was choked. The victim did not sustain serious injury from the assault, according to police.

A Class B felony is punishable by up to seven years imprisonment, plus fines.

Busby was released on $1,500 cash bail and was to be arraigned in Nashua district court on Friday, Feb. 17.

St. John Food Pantry seeking donations

The pantry shelves that provide food for weekend brown bag meal program for local students are bare, and a group of dedicated volunteers are looking for donations.

The program, which runs through the St. John Food Pantry in Hudson, is operated by Alvirne High School honors students. The students fill food bags with 3 dinners, two lunches and two breakfast meals for about 75 students on a weekly basis who are on the free and reduced lunch program.

The pantry is looking for fruit cups, raisins, granola bars, fruit snacks cheese and peanut butter crackers, bags of pretzels and similar items such as individual cereals, oatmeal packets, Pop Tarts, macaroni and cheese and small chicken salad packets.

Besides snacks, the pantry can use donations of flour, sugar peanut butter and jelly.

The student group will come to local businesses or organizations who are considering holding a food drive and will give a tour of the pantry upon request.

Winter Carnival
slated for Feb. 25

The Merrimack Parks & Recreation Department will host the 25th annual Winter Carnival next Saturday, Feb. 25 at Wasserman Park.

The event features an afternoon full of free activities, such as a youth ice fishing derby, the popular Cardboard Box Sled Contest, free snowshoes rentals, ice carving demonstrations, antique Sno Car rides and s’mores over a campfire.

The events will be located both inside and outside the Function Hall, which has a brand new heating system this year. The event runs from 12-3 p.m.

The cardboard contest will begin at 1 p.m. and participants will check in at the registration table at the bottom of the sled hill. This is a free event but advanced registration is required.

NH1 sold to FCC for $100M, will go off air

A New Hampshire television station that debuted in 2014 has been sold at auction to the Federal Communications Commission for an estimated $100 million and will go off the air in the coming months.

Bill Binnie of WBIN-TV said Friday that proceeds from the sale will be used by the company to acquire other media assets in digital, outdoor and radio areas. He said many employees will be transferred to a new division. There will be continued investment in its 19 radio stations and news web business, NH1.com.

Robb Atkinson, general manager of the newly expanded NH1 News digital business, says the company is investing in delivering news content on mobile phones, tablets and home computers. He said the days of running home to watch news on TV "are quickly disappearing."

UNH participating in datajam competition

University of New Hampshire students will be learning how to tell creative stories based on large sets of data through a competition called a datajam.

Now in its second year, the datajam connects students to real world scenarios where analyzing openly available data sets can help speed up business decisions. The program, which includes team presentations and prizes, is being held Friday.

Liberty Mutual insurance company is partnering with UNH for the event.
