Report: Fuel worker shot from behind
An investigation shows a homeowner fatally shot a heating oil company employee from behind as the worker was performing an annual tuneup, then went to another part of his home to kill himself, authorities said Tuesday.
Richard Verville, 71, of Londonderry, had used the services of City Fuel in the past for problems with his heating system, Attorney General Joseph Foster said.
The employee, Daniel Rabideau, 59, went to Verville’s house on May 24 to perform a scheduled annual tuneup. He was shot from behind while working on the heating system, Foster said, adding that "there is no evidence of any other interactions or relationship" between the two.
"Instead, the incident appears to have been the result of Mr. Verville’s significant mental health issues," Foster said.
Police and SWAT team members had responded to Verville’s home on May 24. The neighborhood was evacuated, and several nearby schools were placed on lockdown because of the police activity in the area. Neighbors told police that a City Fuel van pulled up to the home and they heard gunfire a short time later.
