State filing period set for June

By Staff | May 23, 2016

NASHUA – Nashua residents interested in running for state representative this fall will have a 10-day period in the beginning of June to file at City Hall.

The filing period for the New Hampshire House runs from June 1 to 5 p.m. on June 10. The city clerk’s office will have the required forms available for those seeking a state representative seat in their respective city wards – there are a total of 27 representatives from Nashua – and Republican voters will also have an opportunity to sign up to be a delegate to the Republican state convention.

"The (Republican convention) delegate is just a one-page form, nothing else needs to be filled," Nashua City Clerk Patricia Piecuch said last week.

There is a $2 fee for state representative candidates. Piecuch said those who do not want to pay can file primary petitions to avoid the fee, but she said that has not yet happened since she started working in Nashua.

"Anybody that fills out the declaration of candidacy form for state representative also has to fill out a financial form," she added.

For all other elected offices, the filings go through the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s office. These positions include U.S. senator, U.S. representative, governor, Executive Council, state Senate and all county offices.

Declaration of candidacy filings for the primary election, scheduled for Sept. 13, are not available online. To receive those forms or learn more about any related assessment fees, residents may contact the Secretary of State at 271-3242 or via email at elections@sos.nh.gov.

The office in Concord will remain open until 5 p.m. on June 10, the last day of the filing period. All filings made on the final day must be done in person by the candidate both with the Nashua city clerk and at the state level.

On another matter, New Hampshire voters have until May 31 to change their political party affiliation at their town offices or with their municipal Supervisors of the Checklist. This is the last day to make party changes until the primary election in September.
