Can technology turn a plain old wood stove into a tech-laden heating option?

I didn't expect to be able to use the word "gasification" in writing about household wood stoves, but I got to do it in my column today, about a New Hampshire firm that's redesigning the cordwood stove as part of the Wood Stove Design Challenge, a national contest by an industry group called Alliance for Green Heat.
The idea is to make it more efficient and, more importantly, make it burn cleaner, producing less soot. It's got a graphical user interface, no less - makes the half-rusted metal box in my basement look kind of shabby.
