A shovel-full of this snow could weigh 10 pounds

The snow we got yesterday - hooray! snow!!! - was pretty heavy and settled a bit. This morning, my CoCoRaHs measurement found 7.5 inches on the ground, which melted down to 1.25 inches of water. That's a 6-1 ratio, which is heavy snow - raiot of 10-1 is more normal.

Since a cubic foot of water weighs 62 pounds, a cubic foot of this snow should weigh about 10 pounds. No wonder it's so heavy to shovel!
