It's hard to fix a typo on a wooden trail sign in the mountains

Geeks, I have found, are pretty good spellers. Spelling requires rules - stupid, inconsistent rules, but rules nonetheless - and geeks like to follow rules.
So if you're reading this column, the above sign (spotted while hiking in the Adirondacks last weekend) should get your blood boiling. Somebody had scratched out the distance, for some reason, but nobody fixed the misspelling of "ascent".
