Your devoted editor has left the building … for a few days

Kathleen Palmer

Well, I’m finally taking a few days off this summer – just in time for the end of summer!

My talented co-worker Kati MacFarline laid out this week’s Encore for me. You might notice it’s a bit smaller; this week marks a move from 32 pages to 24 pages. Hopefully you’ll find the content going forward to be just more condensed, but still relevant and local. This first version has a few entertainment filler stories in my absence, but there’s still live content. ...

To wit: Music writer Paul Collins has written a column on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ new album, “Hypnotic Eye.” It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. I’ve been a Tom Petty fan since high school. Read Collins’ musings on Page 3.

She’s not just a great designer; MacFarline is also a great writer and photographer. Our center spread this week is a product review she did on Mini Babycakes Cake Pops Maker. I enjoyed her humorous first-person observations on making the delectable treats that were quickly devoured by our ever-ravenous newsroom compatriots. See her review on Page 12.

Correspondent Jenn Stone-Grimaldi also did a product review, for KettlePizza. It helps home chefs make wood-fired style pizza on their grill. The photo of that grilled pizza made my mouth water! Read her review on Page 15.

And Emily Kwesell, my now-back-to-college intern (I’ll miss her!) did a story on the Gate City Brew Fest event at Holman Stadium this weekend. That’s on Page 14. If you’re looking for more adult-beverage fun, The Telegraph’s Wicked Wine & Brew Fest will be at Mel’s Funway in Litchfield on Sept. 6. More details at www.facebook.com/TelegraphEvents, in Encore and The Telegraph in the next couple weeks.

Signing off for a few days; see you when I return!
