This weekend only, Stagecoach Productions will present the musical “Catch Me If You Can” at the Janice B. Streeter Theater, 14 Court St., Nashua.

Based on the hit DreamWorks film and the incredible true story that inspired it, “Catch Me If You Can” is “a high-flying, splashy new musical” that was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Teenager Frank W. Abagnale Jr. (played by Joseph Paoni) runs away from home in search of a glamorous life. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer – living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when Frank’s lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty (played by Stuart Harmon), Carl pursues Frank across the country. Along the way, though, Frank and Carl forge an unlikely friendship and discover a way to ultimately work together.

If you didn’t know the popular movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the lovable con artist had been adapted into a musical, you’re not alone. Even some of the cast were not familiar with it. “I knew the movie,” said Bob Frasca, who plays Frank Sr. “And when I heard the music, it was exactly the kind I love singing. My role has some great bluesy, jazzy crooning,” he said.

Jen Sassak is making her mainstage debut as choreographer with this show, and is very eager for audiences to see her work.

“I’ve choreographed teen shows,” she noted, and Sassak has been dance captain in countless local productions from the stage side. This is her first foray into holding the reins for an adult show, but Sassak is quick to acknowledge her gratitude for the assistance music director and occasional choreographer Judy Hayward gave her.

“I learned so much working with Judy,” she said. “I’m so grateful for her mentoring.” Sassak also sends her appreciation to the hard-working cast. “My job is so much easier because of all of the work they’ve done on their own,” she said. “Everyone’s working on their downtime; the men will work on things, the women will practice.”

Sassak especially appreciates this level of self-directed practice, since she and cast member Donna O’Bryant Metzger, also a well-known local choreographer and director, are simultaneously performing in Majestic Theatre’s production of “Cabaret” in Manchester.

“Catch Me If You Can” will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20 adults, $18 seniors and military, and $12 children younger than 12.
