George Shakin

George Shakin, 99, of Atherton Common, Amherst, NH, died November 12, 2009 at Pheasant Wood Rehabilitation and Care Facility in Peterborough, NH. He was born in New York City, NY on March 5, 1910.

Mr. Shakin lived in Rye, New York for many years, prior to moving to Amherst 20 years ago. A graduate of Brown University, he went on to Fordham University where he attained a law degree. Mr. Shakin practiced civil law and later went into the Lithography printing business with a family member.

He was a World War ll US Army veteran, having served in the JAG. He was a prolific reader, a member of the American Arbitration Board and enjoyed the stock market.

His wife, Estelle Blum, died in 2001. He is survived by a daughter, Jan and her husband Paul Burkhardt of Milford, New Hampshire. He was very proud of his grandchildren, Lindsey and her husband Patrick Masterson of Peterborough, NH and Justin Burkhardt of Washington, DC. He is also survived by a sister, Evelyn Maran and a niece, Diana Maran both living in New York City, NY.

Friends may attend a remembrance for Mr. Shakin at the home of Jan and Paul Burkhardt, 34 Brookview CT., Milford, NH, on Saturday, November 21, 2009, from 1 PM to 3 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to Share, Milford, NH. Jellison Funeral Home in Peterborough is assisting the family with arrangements.
