Mass. police kill suspect after trooper struck

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — A suspect in a New Bedford drug investigation is dead after a gunfight with state police.
Authorities say a trooper was hit during the exchange but the bullet was absorbed by the officer’s body armor and he was not injured.
State police spokesman David Procopio (Pro-KOH’-pee-oh) says members of a tactical unit were attempting to enter an apartment at about 6 a.m. Thursday when someone shot at them through an interior wall.
Officers returned fire, killing the suspect, who has not been identified.
Procopio says a weapon was recovered near the dead man.
He says state police had a warrant for the raid and announced their presence before trying to enter the apartment.
As in all police-involved shootings, he says the death will be investigated by a district attorney.
