Man injured in box truck crash on turnpike
New Hampshire State Police are still investigating a serious crash that badly injured a Massachusetts man and closed the F.E. Everett Turnpike Monday afternoon.
The southbound lane of the turnpike was expected to remain restricted to one lane of travel until around 3 p.m. Monday while state Department of Transportation workers cleaned up after the noontime accident.
Trooper Lance Myrdek said Aid Horton, 62, of Pepperell, Mass., was driving an 18- foot by 20-foot box truck southbound when he left the roadway at about 12:10 p.m., climbed an embankment and struck some trees.
Horton was wearing a seat belt and the truck’s airbag deployed, but he suffered serious injuries and was flown by medflight to a Boston hospital, Myrdek said.
Police closed both southbound lanes for about 25 minutes while the DHART helicopter landed, Myrdek said.
No other cars were involved in the accident, and troopers are investigating why Horton veered off the road, Myrdek said.
The truck was carrying electronic equipment and was ripped open as if by “a can opener” by the trees, Myrdek said, spilling the equipment. State DOT workers were using a front-end loader to clean up before a towing company could remove the truck.
Horton’s condition was not immediately available.
