Yesteryear, right here

Attention, history buffs. Tonight, we encourage you to set aside your plans for a time machine and fire up your car.

You can hobnob with some of your favorite historical figures through free living history presentations at the following locations:

• Steve Blunt presents John Hutchinson of Milford’s Hutchinson Family Singers, nationally known in the 1840s for their efforts in the anti-slavery movement, at 7 p.m. at the Brookline Public Library at 16 Main St. in Brookline. Call 673-3330 for details.

•• Sally Matson is women’s rights icon Susan B. Anthony at 7 p.m. at the Merrimack Public Library at 470 Daniel Webster Highway in Merrimack. Space is limited, so please register online at www.merrimack.lib.nh.us or by calling 424-5021.

• Steve and Sharon Wood portray Abraham Lincoln and Sarah Josepha Hale in a special program about the origins of the national Thanksgiving holiday at 7:30 p.m. at the Nashua Historical Society at 5 Abbott St. in Nashua. Call 883-0015 for details.

Weighty topics

Every year, you acquire several unwelcome guests during the holiday season: extra pounds. Learn how to manage tempting holiday treats without depriving yourself at “Eating Your Way through the Holidays, or Not,” sponsored by the Greater Nashua Business and Professional Women’s organization, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza at 2 Somerset Parkway in Nashua.

Weight Watchers group leader Mary Beth Saunders will share how you can manage stress (a major factor that can lead to overeating) during this busy season and take control of your eating instead of allowing your eating to control you. This event includes the presentation, networking, and a buffet lunch. We guarantee you’ll have the willpower to refrain from going up for seconds. Cost is $16 for members, $20 for nonmembers, and no RSVP is required. For more information, visit www.BPWNashua.com or leave a voicemail at 866-816-6817.

What’s in a name?

You yell at, plead with, and rejoice over your computer as though it were a person – why not give it a name? Today on Name Your PC Day, we encourage you to consider the qualities of your computer and select a name that accurately reflects them. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

• For a computer with high-level virus protection software, consider Glenda (English/Welsh, feminine) or Amala (Indian, femine), both of which connote cleanliness and purity.

• Xun (Chinese, masculine and feminine) means “fast or sudden” and would be an excellent name for a computer with a quick load time.

• For a computer that’s built from quality components and has a good firewall, we suggest Wafi (Arabic, masculine), meaning “trustworthy and reliable,” or Eustathios (Ancient Greek, masculine), meaning “well-built or stable.”

• Appropriate names for laptops include Juvela (Esperanto, feminine), which translates to “jewel-like,” and Chiumbo (East African, masculine), which means “small” in Mwera.

• For a crash-inclined computer that consistently loses data, there’s no better name than Talbot (English, masculine), which is derived from the words “tal” (“to destroy”) and “bod” (“message”).

• And when you finally get frustrated and pitch Talbot out a window, you can change his name to Sirpa (Finnish, feminine) – it comes from the word “sirpale,” meaning “small piece or fragment.”

Touchdown!

How many generic Patriots can koozies does the football fan in your life really need? Pick up one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts featuring Tedy Bruschi, Tom Brady and other New England sports heroes at the Nashua Lions Club’s second annual sports memorabilia sale and silent auction from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at St. Philip Greek Orthodox Church Hall, 500 W. Hollis St. in Nashua.

The sale includes both signed and unsigned memorabilia. You’ll also have the opportunity to bid on items autographed by current and former New Hampshire and New England sports stars (like Nashua’s own Greg Landry) at a special silent auction table.

We imagine the sports enthusiast on your Christmas list will be much more excited to receive a gift that gives them chills rather than yet another gift that keeps their soda chilled.Proceeds from the event will benefit the club’s Charity Fund. Call 429-0561 or visit nashua.nhlions.org for details.
