Merrimack voters OK land transfer for new fire station

By KAREN LOVETT Staff Writer

MERRIMACK – Voters in Merrimack approved a land transfer Tuesday that will give 3 acres to the town meant for a new fire station.

A special election was held for that one question, and voters approved it 700-286.

A total of 987 people cast ballots (one was deemed “unreadable”). Out of 19,035 registered voters, just 5 percent turned out.

The outcome is not a great surprise, as the issue has not generated much controversy in town. There were no dollar amounts attached to the measure.

The approval means 3 acres of district land on Continental Boulevard will become town property if voters approve the construction of a new fire station for the south part of town, among other terms and conditions.

The town has plans to build a station to replace the old and outdated south station on Naticook Road. That station was constructed in 1973, is too small for training, lacks proper equipment storage and has no accommodations for female employees, town officials have said.

Plans have been floated to build an updated, $2 million station that would house an engine and a brush fire truck. The project may be put on the ballot this spring.
